Ireland invited into extended C&G Trophy
ICU Media Release
The Irish Cricket Union today received a formal invitation to compete in the England & Wales Cricket Board’s new Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy in 2006. The competition will involve all 18 first class counties and, if accepted, Ireland and Scotland. There will be two conferences, North and South, with round robin matches involving 10 teams in each conference. The winners of each group will play each other in the final in August 2006. Ireland would compete in the Southern conference.
Commenting on the news Peter Thompson, Chief Executive of the ICU said “We are delighted to be invited to compete in the new C&G trophy and it is a wonderful opportunity for Irish cricket to develop further with nine matches against professional counties being guaranteed. In addition it will provide top quality cricket for our supporters and sponsors. These will be key factors when the ICU meets in the New Year to discuss this matter further and respond formally to the ECB.”
